Who run the world? … Daenerys, Yara, Lyanna and Sansa do.
The Battle of the Bastards definitely lived up to the anticipation that the season buit up. Not only was the cinematography amazing, but the storyline kept you on the edge of your seat for the entire episode. I definitely yelled at my laptop more times than I care to admit.
We begin in Mereen, where Daenerys and her dragons retaliate against the slave owners who were in the middle of trying to take back their slaves. Not only did Daenerys and her Dragons destroy their ships, but we also see Yara and Theon finally make it to Dany. They agree to join forces and the girl power in that room, is enough for anyone to start singing the Beyonce song, “Run the World (Girls)”. Now on to the good stuff … It happened. We’ve been waiting for what feels like the entire series; but the Starks are back at Winterfell. You don’t know happiness until you see the Starks’ banner fly over Winterfell. Okay, I’m getting a bit ahead of myself; the battle for Winterfell got off to a rocky start. Ramsay, always one to play some mind games, starts it off by letting Rickon run to Jon Snow. As Rickon is running, in a very straight line (and not in a zig zag like I yelled for him to do), Ramsay proceeds to shoot arrows at him. In true Game of Thrones fashion, the moment Jon Snow and Rickon are steps away from each other, one of Ramsay’s arrows strikes Rickon and shit GETS REAL.
The moment when Jon Snow is standing in front of Ramsay’s army while they’re all charging towards him; that’s when I knew this was about to be the best episode of the series. The battle was everything you would expect plus more blood, guts, tears, guts, dirt, guts … did I mention the guts? I know they mentioned it a couple of times, but it wasn’t until the battle began, that you truly realize just how outnumbered Jon Snow and his men are. They’re surrounded; at one point we almost lose Jon Snow when he just about gets crushed to death (anyone else scream at their laptop?) and just when the last ounce of hope is escaping our grip motherfucking SANSA saves the day. Sansa was not by herself though; Sansa and Littlefinger come in to save the day. Nothing is more satisfying the look on Ramsay’s face when he realizes that he has lost. I’ll tell you the truth; I was nervous for Jon Snow to come head to head with Ramsay. The show had created, arguably, the most hated character in the series and there was doubt that his demise may leave us unsatisfied.
Is it weird that a happy ending means a brutal death? Jon Snow and Ramsay finally came head to head and Ramsay got the brutal beating that he completely deserves. Jon Snow didn’t kill him though; nope he left him tied up in a cell where he met his actual demise in a truly poetic way. Sansa unleashed his own hounds on Ramsay and he was torn apart by the very hounds who he trained to kill others. Beautiful.
The battle for Winterfell was so much more than just a battle for a house; this was personal. You felt every ounce of how personal it was when Jon Snow and Ramsay came head to head. I’m calling it now; Kit Harrington deserves all of the awards for this episode alone. Two out of the four Starks are back at Winterfell and I’m guessing that’s the happiest ending we’re ever going to get out of Game of Thrones.
The “Battle of the Bastards” was full of girl power and my heart could barely handle it. Not only was this episode a cinematic masterpiece, but it also progressed the storyline in a way that makes you look forward to the season finale. Will Margaery finally reveal the plan she’s been working on? How will Sansa repay Littlefinger for his help? Have we forgotten about Bran again? Will we lose a major character this season? Are Daenerys and Yara going to become the next power couple? (Yes please.) Who knows where we’ll end up by the last minute of the season finale but one thing’s for sure; this is the best season the show has created and I am all aboard this anxiety-filled fandom.
