Daredevil Season 2 Episode 1 Review
by Bryan Scheidler

Daredevil is back and it is better than ever. Those were my thoughts 5 minutes into episode 1. In all honesty just the fact that I got to go back to Hell’s Kitchen and catch up with Matt, Foggy, and Karen was enough for me to get excited, but episode 1 was far more than a typical season intro episode.

Season 2 starts off in a very organic way after the end of season 1. In a way it feels like we are back after a mid season hiatus instead of a brand new season. The characters all feel like they have grown, the city is still trying to make sense of “the Devil of Hell’s Kitchen”, and the bad guys are trying to fill the vacuum left by the fall of Wilson Fisk. The relationship of Foggy and Matt, while it is mended, is still on thin ice and it is the conflict between them that is at the core of season 2; is there a place in this new world for Matt’s vigilante justice? A difficult question to begin with made all the more complicated with the arrival of Jon Bernthal’s Punisher.

We don’t get much screen time with the actual Punisher this episode, but the little time we do get is priceless.  He is intensely confident with zero subtlety.  The fight we get at the end of the episode shows just how skilled he truly is as he goes toe to toe with Matt. Additionally we see the lengths this man is willing to go to for his mission.

As great as finally getting to see the Punisher was though, the highlight of this episode has got to be Deborah Ann Woll’s Karen Page. Karen has had the most growth since we met her in season 1. From being the victim in first season to some one who is control of their life in a world where that is nearly impossible. She is smart, brave and resourceful, more than an equal to either Matt or Foggy. I believe 100% that Karen reflects the heart of the city and her view of Daredevil whether positive or negative is a good reflection for how the rest of the city feels.

I am only one episode in as I write this and I can already say how amazing this season will be. As the credits began to roll at the end I had to get up and do a victory lap around the room because this is going to be a great season and I can’t wait to see the rest of it.

The word of this episode and season is warzone, a reference to the Punisher series of that name. If you want to make the show extra fun, anytime someone says “Warzone” take a shot (get it, a shot like the Punisher, I’m hilarious)

Now on to Episode 2!
