TV SHOW PREMIERE: This Is Us Review
by Julie Perez

Maybe it’s because they used my favorite song of all time, “I Won’t Give Up” by Jason Mraz during the trailer for the show. Maybe it’s because I missed Mandy Moore. Maybe it’s because I’m in love with Milo Ventimiglia and I don’t care who knows it. There was just something about the previews for the new show, This Is Us, which told me that I was going to immediately fall in love with this series.

If you still have yet to watch the Series premier, do not fret; this will be a spoiler free review (for the most part) because the Pilot episode is just too special to completely spoil it for you. I emotionally prepared myself before the episode began; I just knew that tears would be shed. I didn’t know when or why but with tissues in hand I began the episode.

The episode begins with these words on the screen:
“THIS IS A FACT: ACCORDING TO WIKIPEDIA, THE AVERAGE HUMAN BEING SHARES HIS OR HER BIRTHDAY WITH OVER 18 MILLION OTHER HUMAN BEINGS.”
“THERE IS NO EVIDENCE THAT SHARING THE SAME BIRTHDAY CREATES ANY TYPE OF BEHAVIORAL LINK BETWEEN THOSE PEOPLE.”

The show is about unconventional families; it’s about the flaws that bring us strength. It showcases love in all of these different ways while keeping genuine emotion throughout the episode. For a pilot episode, it was one of the strongest that I’ve seen. It gave us enough story this first episode to leave us wanting more while giving us a back story on each character which immediately makes us become emotionally invested.

So maybe I am overly-emotional or maybe I’m the perfect amount of emotional, but I cried twice during this episode. Okay fine! I cried once and I sobbed another time. The premier episode begins with three main storylines. First, a married couple who are expecting triplets. Then a semi-famous-actor and his obese sister who have to deal with his career possibly ending and her need to improve her self image. In the third, we see a man who is a husband and father struggle to make a connection with his estranged father who once abandoned him in front of a fire house. These storylines stand beautifully as independent pieces but it’s when you realize how they’re connected that the true magic happens.

If you’re feeling the need to stay in on a Tuesday night with a box of tissues and a bottle glass of wine, then this show is for you. In the middle of watching this show I actually got chills when I realized the magic that I was witnessing on screen. The twist at the end alone should be enough to give this show a chance (I don’t want to spoil anything but will discuss the twist next week.) This Is Us, has just become my new favorite show and I am so ready to be emotionally scarred by it.
